The Art in Wood
The thrill and sometimes frustration of working with a living material that moves and twists as I
work cannot easily be conveyed in words but the shapes and textures that can be created are
endless and the drive to be unique and push boundaries is exciting.
These inherent challenges keep me moving forward to see how far I can develop the medium
and what visual impact I can produce in each piece, whilst being sympathetic to the material
itself.
The Corvus Nero Collection was inspired by the landscape around my studio in Staffordshire.
The raucous call of crows flying overhead echo across the hardened furrows of the fields below.
My breath visible as Isurvey the frozen landscape. The sense of stillness, overwhelming. The
contrast of bleached wood andblack matt acrylic captures this moment in time. The textured
bands of grain, the furrows of the fields, frozen and yet flowing across the landscape.
As an emerging designer/maker in wood, I work with ethically sourced native English timbers,
creating decorative vessels and sculptural forms with distinctive textures, pyrography and
carving. I create movement across the surface with multiple layers of fine texture. Simple marks blended to form complex surfaces. Humans are naturally curious, the need to turn the piece,
follow the curves, explore the tactile surface, question the nature of the material, engage the
audience. The thrill and sometimes frustration of working with a living material that moves and
twists as I work cannot easilybe conveyed in words but the shapes and textures that can be
created are endless and the drive to be unique and push boundaries is exciting. These inherent challenges keep me moving forward to see how far I can develop the medium and what visual
impact I can produce in each piece, whilst being sympathetic to the material itself.
